Hi Stacey:

Thanks for the compliments! Your pre-workout snack should be easy to digest and should give some energy. That means you're looking for some carbs. Your oatmeal with blueberries would meet those qualifications. I might use a little protein powder if you're doing a long workout, but I wouldn't use an entire scoop. For a shorter workout, I'd skip the extra protein before the workout and add in more after the workout.

I hope that helps!

Hi John. I've just discovered your blog and am loving it! I workout at 7am 5 days a week. 3 days of weight lifting/20 min. high intensity running intervals and the other 2 days, just the H.I. R.I. What would you suggest for a pre-workout snack that early in the morning? After my workout I eat a serving of oatmeal with blueberries, some sliced almonds and mix in my whey protein. Thanks!

Hi Robin:

Sorry to hear that exercise didn't leave you with the same feeling. It's hard to say what might have contributed to that feeling for you and from your message I don't know if it was physical or mental exhaustion. Here's what I would think about:

1. Did you enjoy the activity your were performing or dreading it while you were doing it? Did you swim because someone said you needed to swim? Same for the biking? (The Big Wheel on the other hand...I wish they made a Big Wheel for adults.).
2. Were you doing those things too often and not giving yourself a break?
3. Were you eating anything before, during, or after?
4. Did you have friends to participate in those activites together?

Just a fw suggestions and I hope that you can find what fires you up and makes you feel alive!

For a lot of people, myself included, physical movement does not "make me feel alive".

I was a varsity swimmer in high school. A swimmer, lifeguard, and cyclist (too poor to own a car) in college. After college, I took up running, then yoga. As a kid I used to roller skate and ride my Big-Wheel.

And it all made me feel DEAD. Moving around is depleting, exhausting and draining. It made me depressed. I would break down in tears during workouts. I needed a nap right after any session. And even after becoming relatively fit, a workout never "felt good". I was lucky if I didn't fall asleep in the carried home, my energy was completely gone.

I'm not saying all this to be difficult or negative. I wish it did feel good for me.

I understand your logic Rozi. Unfortunately humans are not canines. To date I have lost 115 pounds by having John Chase as my personal trainer. So I think I’ll continue to listen to his advice. Study after study has shown that people who lead a sedentary “couch potato” lifestyle will ultimately develop health problems. The proof is in the pudding. For example: It has been well established that increasing physical activity plays an important role in reducing disease risk; specifically obesity and diabetes. The only way to see results is to eat right and not only increase exercise levels but also decrease sedentary behaviors. The more you use your body, the healthier it gets. Those are the facts. Eating less while spending endless hours watching TV, or holding a job that requires you to sit behind a desk for 8-10 hours a day engaging in virtually no physical movement, is not going to make you healthy. As a nurse, I have frequently seen patients diagnosed with diabetes reverse the disease and become healthy again simply by making healthier dietary changes and increasing physical activity. No one can do it for you; no dog logic, no prescription drug, and no surgical procedure can give you the same effects as a healthy lifestyle. Nothing else on Earth can create the health that your body would create on its own when you eat clean and engage in regular physical exercise. Listen to your body. It’s telling you to get moving! No one's going to do it for you; this is something you must want to do for yourself. However, I know an awesome personal trainer at BRAC that can help. His name is John Chase.

We have noticed in our husky, Gaia, that when it's hot outside she definately wants to conserve energy and gets less active. She also stops eating and sometimes eats every other day and is happy to just lay around. It's like she knows she's "wasting" energy by just eating. As it cools down, she eats her food and Emma's food (a maltipoo), and if we'd let her the cat's food and our food. She's also running around the house and itching to get outside and play. Does she know that the extra food will give her the energy she needs to be more active? The vet says she's the perfect weight and perfectly healthy. If a dog can instinctively know what their body needs, when it needs it, maybe this is a lesson for us to listen to our bodies. If you choose to eat more calories, "energy", be willing to "use" it, exercise and be active!

HI!

Your section on inactivity was good :D "If you’re sitting down right now, stand up. There, you’ve just significantly increased your metabolism. Anything you can do sitting, try to do it standing.

Talking on the phone? Stand up and walk around"

To many people are inactive and wonder why their metabolism is not as high as it could be. I have personally found that lean muscle creates high metabolism and exercise on top of that combined with six small meals a day gives a huge boost.

Cheers
